Don't judge a book by its cover
Even though the pieces of KFC chicken in the picture above look very tender and juicy, many people would disagree on the safety of this fast food restaurant. KFC has been known to not always serve the best chicken to their customers. There are multiple cases of food poisoning all around the world that have occurred because of the lack of preparation and cooking of their meat. It is even known that a young girl in Australia got severe brain damage and is in a wheelchair from one of their chicken wraps because of a salmonella infection.
Salmonella is a very serious issue that can occur with meats because they need to be properly cooked or else many side effects can occur to the customer who digested the infected food. Some of the less severe side effects are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and a fever that can occur between 12-72 hours after the consumption of the food. However, some cases end up causing more extreme side effects and possibly can kill a person if it enters their bloodstream. The United States reports around 42,000 cases of salmonella within a year, which effects mostly younger children and the elderly. Preventing salmonella infection when you are preparing and cooking your own food is much more simple than when you eat at a restaurant or fast food chain because it is not always easy to tell if a food is contaminated.
Another issue that has KFC has been accused of is the reuse of frying oil for up to 10 days. Studies have been shown that this procedure can cause cancer to the person consuming the food. The KFC justifies the use of reused oil as being regulated by the FDA and stating that it is completely safe and they are not partaking in any incorrect practices. Harmful products such as Acrylamide and Benzopyrene are created when oil is fried over and over again. These products are widely known to be a contributing factor to cancer, but KFC continues to deny all accusations against them.
